Paper accepted in Journal of Universal Computer Science

Our work on Recommending Systems for IPTV services was published on the December 2011 issue of the Journal of Universal Computer Science. It was a lot of work but also a lot of fun working with our colleagues in Chile. Thanks a lot guys! If you are interested in knowing a bit more about state of the art in recommending systems for this kind of applications this paper can give you good hints. Please read it and enjoy it.

Book on the Japanese Digital TV standard

On September 2011 a member of our team published a book on the Japanese and Brazilian Digital TV standards for Spanish-speaking countries. The book has been published in the official site on Digital TV of the Chilean Ministry of Telecommunications. Despite of so many countries in South American being adopting the Japanese digital TV standard there is very small information in Spanish on it. Most of it is so technical that only engineers can understand it. The main purpose of this book was to give Spanish-speaking people an easy-and-fun way to learn about the revolutionary Digital television.

Moving Objects Tracked!

We have been working on a Moving Objects' Tracking technology that works in compressed H.264 format. The main feature of our algorithm is that we do not need to decompress the video into raw format in order to track the moving objects so we can gain a lot in terms of processing speed. The following sample video shows motion vectors associated to the moving objects.

Advertisement in Mobile Phones

We are thinking about mobile advertisement recently. From the advertiser perspective, we are envisioning a new platform to provide easy access to publicize advertisements in mobile phones. From the consumer side, the advertisements shouldn’t be a burden, but a convenient way to get a benefit. The following video shows a simple prototype implementation for the iPhone.

The video shows only the basic interaction with the ad, some details about it, like website, map and other some discount benefits (a barcode) and the possibility to share this ad (and benefit) using a QR code.

Video Fingerprinting

The team has recently been working on a new Video Fingerprinting project. The obtained results are promising, not only on the performance of the solution but also in indexing the information. This kind of information needs special attention when handled. A good balance between size and relevance of information needs to be found, to avoid either bad performance or storing a large amount of information. This is, therefore, a challenging project that tackles many computer science aspects at the same time.

Video Streaming using PR-SCTP

Our receiver has no error concealment yet so meaningful PSNR/SSIM values were not possible to obtain at this time. Audio will be addressed in future work. Our analytical model is general enough to apply to any type of data, not only video, as it only considers channel PER and data size.
